I've run into the same problem with landscapes in layout.  Just too dense to
see what you're doing.  Till we get hidden line removal here's a workaround.
 Make a crossection of your model using cut&paste in modeler.  A few polygons
wide and as long as you need it to be.  Save it and bring it into layout via
"Replace Object".  This works well to put other objects on your landscape.
 Also helps tremendously with terrain following flythroughs!.  Make as many
as you need to to accomplish what you want.
